Older buildings. Everyday comfort.

Comfort that works
from floor to floor.

An older building can have drafty lower floors and an overheated top floor at the same time. We look at where your living space meets the attic, exterior walls and unheated areas to identify practical insulation and air-sealing improvements.

01 / FLOOR-TO-FLOOR COMFORT

Cold downstairs. Hot up top.

In a triple-decker or multifamily building, comfort can vary from floor to floor. Tell us which rooms are affected so the assessment can focus on the assemblies around them—not assume every unit needs the same work.

02 / OLDER ATTICS

Look above the top-floor ceiling.

Attic hatches, penetrations and uneven insulation can leave paths for heat to escape. We review accessible conditions and ventilation before recommending how to improve the boundary above your home.

03 / OPEN-WALL RENOVATIONS

Make the most of exposed framing.

Renovating an older house or apartment? Before walls close up, align the insulation plan with the assembly, required R-value and next stage of construction. Existing finishes and access shape what is practical elsewhere.

Insulation services in Greater Boston

Insulate the assembly.
Respect the building.

Different parts of an older building call for different solutions. We assess the available access and assembly before recommending materials for the attic, exterior envelope or renovation area.

Attic insulation & air sealing

Start at the boundary above the upper floor. We review existing insulation, accessible air-leak paths and ventilation to plan attic improvements without treating insulation as a substitute for ventilation.

Spray foam insulation

For suitable exposed walls or roof assemblies, we assess whether open-cell or closed-cell foam fits the design. Assembly details, moisture considerations and required protective finishes belong in that decision.

Blown-in & fiberglass insulation

Not every space calls for spray foam. Blown-in or fiberglass may suit accessible attics and framed areas; the choice depends on existing conditions, the assembly and the required insulation level.

Insulation removal

Older insulation may need to come out before an upgrade can move forward. We assess its condition and the planned work, then define any removal and replacement in the project scope.

Commercial, churches & nonprofits

Planning improvements to a Greater Boston business, church or nonprofit facility? Start with the occupied areas, building use and access needs so the insulation scope fits the property. Mass Save incentives may be available for qualifying commercial, church and nonprofit projects. Eligibility and project approval must be confirmed; no incentive is guaranteed.

Plan around the building you have

From first conversation
to a defined scope.

  1. Describe the building and the concern.

Tell us the town, number of units and whether the issue is in a top-floor room, attic, exterior wall or renovation area.

  2. Coordinate access for the assessment.

Discuss which areas can be reached, whether units are occupied and who can provide access. We review the conditions that affect the proposed work.

  3. Review a defined insulation scope.

Your estimate identifies the recommended installation type and R-value. For renovations or shared buildings, discuss access and coordination before scheduling the work.

Questions from building owners

Before work begins.

Older houses and multi-unit properties raise different questions. Here is where to start.

Can you assess a triple-decker or three-family building?

Yes. Tell us which units, attic areas or exterior assemblies you want assessed and who can authorize access. We define the insulation scope around the building’s conditions rather than assuming every floor needs identical work.

Will insulation work require opening finished walls?

Not every assessment leads to wall work. Access and the proposed assembly determine what is feasible; accessible attics and exposed renovation areas offer different options from finished walls. We discuss the approach before you decide.

How should I plan work in an occupied multifamily property?

Identify the owner or property manager, the areas involved and any access restrictions. Discuss occupant coordination and any product-specific re-entry requirements before installation; those details depend on the selected work.

Is spray foam always the right choice for an older house?

No. Existing assemblies, moisture conditions, ventilation and access affect the choice. Spray foam, blown-in or fiberglass can serve different purposes, and the assessment helps define the appropriate approach.
